Borehole Seismic Experiment
The experiment at WAIS divide was designed to test methods for ice crystal fabric determination using seismic anisotropy. Inferring both the vertical and horizontal anisotropy can, in theory, be done entirely using "common-midpoint" measurements made at the ice sheet surface. But to validate the method (which requires correcting for the orientation and angle dependence of the reflection coefficient for the ice bottom), we were taking direct measurments of attenuation and anisotropy using a borehole seismometer deployed in the borehole left behind by the WAIS divide ice coring project. |
